BREAKING: Museveni Okays NMG Uganda Reopening

Nile Post reports that Nation Media Group Uganda is set to restart operations after more than a month of closure, following talks involving company executives, Ugandan government officials and President Yoweri Museveni. The group said on Tuesday that its platforms — including Daily Monitor, NTV Uganda, Spark TV, KFM and Dembe FM — would return in phases as operational preparations are completed.

According to the report, the reopening was authorised by President Museveni after negotiations led by NMG Editor-in-Chief Joe Ageyo and later joined by NMG Chairman Joe Muganda, CEO Geoffrey Odundo, NMG Uganda Managing Director Susan Nsibirwa and acting General Manager Allan Chekwech. The final discussions reportedly included Uganda Communications Commission Executive Director Nyombi Thembo. Taifa Group, NMG’s majority shareholder through Taarifa Limited, also confirmed the approval and thanked Museveni and Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba for their roles in the process.

The shutdown began on June 28, when security personnel reportedly surrounded NMG Uganda’s Namuwongo offices and transmission facilities, forcing its broadcast, print and digital services off air. Nile Post says officials had raised concerns about what they viewed as imbalance in the company’s editorial coverage and sought changes tied to professionalism. Earlier discussions reportedly took place at the Special Forces Command headquarters in Entebbe.

The development matters because NMG is one of the region’s most prominent private media organisations, and the interruption affected major news, radio and television services in Uganda. The company says it will focus on restoring its platforms, strengthening local content and maintaining editorial independence, fairness and professionalism.
