Boy arrested following Bradley Lowery taunt

What the report says
West Midlands Police are investigating an incident linked to Coventry City’s match against Sunderland on Saturday, after a video circulating on social media appeared to show a young fan taunting Sunderland supporters with an image of Bradley Lowery. Police said a 14-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of a public order offence and later bailed after handing himself in.
Bradley Lowery, a Sunderland fan, died in 2017 at the age of six after living with a rare childhood cancer. The reaction to the footage has been strong because Bradley’s story has long resonated across football, and his family says his memory should be treated with respect.
Bradley’s mother, Gemma Lowery, said the family was hurt to see a treasured memory used in a cruel way. Through the Bradley Lowery Foundation, she also said she did not want hostility directed at the teenager, but wanted him to understand the impact of his actions.
Coventry City said it was aware of the footage and would work with the relevant authorities. Police said they understood the upset caused and were keeping Bradley’s family updated as the inquiry continued. The case highlights how quickly social media footage from football matches can prompt police action and public scrutiny over abusive behaviour in the stands.
