The BBC says Suu Kyi was detained after the armed forces overthrew her elected government in 2021 and later sentenced to 33 years in prison on charges that are widely disputed. Her sentence has since been reduced, and she has been moved to house arrest. Her son, Kim Aris, has recently led an international campaign calling for proof that the 81-year-old is alive and well, after repeated claims from the military had not been backed by independent evidence.
