At least 13 people were killed and 39 injured in a Ukrainian drone strike on Russia’s Tatarstan region, according to Russian officials quoted by BBC World News. One child was among the dead. The attack was reported in and around Nizhnekamsk, a city more than 1,100 kilometres from the Ukrainian border that is known for its oil-refining and petrochemical industry.

BBC World News said the strike continued overnight and into the morning, with local sources describing hours of explosions and air raid sirens. Moscow said industrial sites and residential areas were hit, while Russia’s Investigative Committee said civilians were present. The BBC said it could not independently verify that claim. Kyiv had not commented on the attack at the time of reporting.

Tatarstan’s regional leader, Rustam Minnikhanov, confirmed the strike and offered condolences to the victims’ families, while Nizhnekamsk mayor Radmir Belayev said the losses were deeply painful. A period of mourning was declared in the region.

The attack is being described as one of the deadliest Ukrainian drone strikes on Russia since the full-scale war began. More broadly, it fits a pattern in which Ukraine has increasingly targeted Russian infrastructure linked to the war effort, while Russia continues large-scale aerial attacks on Ukrainian cities.
