What the report says

Phys.Org reported that astronomers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have identified an unusually displaced “wandering” black hole through a tidal disruption event, a flare produced when a star is torn apart after passing too close to a massive black hole. The event, named TDE 2025abcr, is described in a paper in The Astrophysical Journal Letters and was reported by Phys.Org on July 27, 2026.

According to the report, the flare occurred about 30,000 light-years from the center of a massive nearby galaxy, making it the most distant offset yet seen for an optically discovered tidal disruption event. Most known tidal disruption events have been detected in galactic centers, where large black holes are expected. The black hole linked to TDE 2025abcr is estimated at roughly one million solar masses.

Researchers suggested the black hole may have been left behind after an ancient galaxy merger or pushed outward by gravitational interactions involving other black holes. Because black holes do not emit light directly, such stellar-disruption flares can expose otherwise hidden objects and help scientists study how massive black holes behave outside galactic cores.

Phys.Org said the team used an artificial-intelligence classifier called tdescore, adapted to find off-center tidal disruption events, and then confirmed the candidate with the Southern Astrophysical Research Telescope in Chile. The finding is significant because it points to a ground-based method for locating wandering black holes, a task expected to become more important as facilities such as the Vera C. Rubin Observatory, Roman and UNC’s Argus Array expand astronomical survey capacity.
