Assad officer extradited to Syria on war crimes charges for first time

What the report says
Lebanon has transferred former Syrian general Adel Issa to Syrian authorities, in what the BBC says is the first extradition of a former Assad-era officer on war crimes-related charges since Bashar al-Assad’s government collapsed. The handover marks a new step in Syria’s effort to pursue senior figures from the old security and military apparatus who fled across the border after the rebel takeover of Damascus in December 2024.
According to the BBC, Issa, 67, was detained on 8 August after visiting the Syrian embassy in Beirut to complete paperwork. Syrian officials say he previously commanded ground forces in Deir Ezzor province until 2016. He is facing allegations that include intentional homicide, facilitating a felony, killing more than two people, and torture leading to death, along with accusations tied to inciting civil and sectarian conflict. Judicial officials told the BBC that Issa denied the charges at the time of his arrest.
The transfer took place under a 1951 agreement between Lebanon and Syria. Issa’s case will now be reviewed by a referral judge in Damascus, who will decide whether it proceeds to criminal court. The move comes as Syria’s new authorities, led by President Ahmed al-Sharaa, intensify action against former regime figures; in January they submitted a list of more than 200 ex-officials they want prosecuted. More broadly, the case reflects continuing efforts to address alleged abuses from the long Syrian civil war, in which hundreds of thousands of people were killed, according to widely cited estimates.
