Myanmar military chief visits Bangkok as diplomatic offensive continues

What the report says
Myanmar’s military chief, General Ye Win Oo, traveled to Bangkok on Thursday for talks with Thailand’s top defense official, marking his first known international trip since taking the post. Al Jazeera reported that the visit is part of a wider diplomatic push by Myanmar’s post-coup leadership, which has been trying to improve its standing after years of isolation following the 2021 military takeover.
The meeting with Thai defense chief Ukris Boontanondha took place at a Bangkok hotel and focused on practical cross-border issues, including security along the 2,400-kilometer frontier, cooperation against drug trafficking and cyber-scam networks, and broader military ties such as counterterrorism, training, humanitarian assistance and disaster response. The trip followed a recent Bangkok visit by Myanmar’s junta leader Min Aung Hlaing, whom Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul also received earlier this month.
According to Al Jazeera, Myanmar’s authorities have been presenting tightly controlled elections held around the start of 2026 as evidence of a return to normality, though UN experts have rejected them as a sham. Rights and democracy groups continue to describe the process as a way to preserve military rule while excluding opponents. The article said neighboring countries, including Thailand, are balancing concerns about legitimacy with border-related realities in dealing with Myanmar’s rulers.
