US researchers have used artificial intelligence to design brand new viruses that function in the laboratory, according to BBC World News. The work, led by scientists at Stanford University, focused on bacteriophages, viruses that infect bacteria rather than people. The team said this was the first time AI had been used to design complete viral genomes, and that the approach produced viruses able to replicate and kill E. coli in lab tests.

The researchers used AI models called Evo1 and Evo2, trained on genetic material from a wide range of organisms, to generate candidate virus genomes. They selected 302 designs for synthesis and found that 16 worked successfully. The BBC reported that the experiments were carried out in a secure laboratory and that the training data excluded viruses that could infect complex organisms.

The findings have been described by outside experts as a major step in synthetic biology, with potential implications for developing new phage therapies against antibiotic-resistant infections. At the same time, specialists warned that the same capability raises urgent biosafety and biosecurity questions if adapted for harmful uses. The development matters because it shows AI can now help design biological systems at a level beyond previous drug-design applications, while also intensifying debate about how to manage the risks of AI-assisted genome engineering.
