Authorities in California say they arrested a 38-year-old man near Donald Trump’s golf course in the Los Angeles area shortly before the president was due to attend a Republican fundraising dinner there. The BBC reports that Jeanine John Taele was taken into custody on Sunday afternoon at Trump National Golf Course in Rancho Palos Verdes after plainclothes federal agents flagged him as suspicious.

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Taele was seen moving around the course, taking photos and videos and appearing to watch security preparations. Investigators say officers found a concealed pistol and ammunition on him, and a loaded gun and magazine in his parked vehicle. He is being held on charges including carrying a concealed firearm and possessing armour-piercing or prohibited ammunition.

The sheriff’s department also said Taele was being sought in connection with a robbery investigation in nearby El Segundo. After his home in Downey was searched with help from the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force and county investigators, authorities said they found additional weapons, body armour, high-capacity magazines and notebooks with concerning statements. Officials have not said there was a credible threat to the wider community, but the investigation is continuing and more charges could follow.

The incident took place during a rare Trump visit to California, where he was scheduled to attend a campaign-style fundraising event. More broadly, it highlights the security concerns that can arise around high-profile political visits, especially when law enforcement is already monitoring a suspicious person.
