Another Mature Catechist Sits PLE in Mubende

What the report says
A 39-year-old catechist in Mubende District, Yosam Kabushehe Nzunguli, has sat the Primary Leaving Examinations after returning to school many years after dropping out in Primary Six. Nile Post reported that he is a catechist at Mwoyo Church of Uganda in Buweekula South and is sitting the national exams at Kitaama Primary School. His case follows the paper’s earlier reporting on another mature catechist in the same district, highlighting an unusual pattern of adult church workers pursuing formal education.
According to the report, Kabushehe left school in 2001 and later entered church service. He said he first completed a two-year catechist course before deciding to rejoin primary school, with support from his wife. He told Nile Post that he had long wanted to improve his academic qualifications and had once hoped to become a lawyer. The article says he first received private tutoring before eventually joining the regular Primary Seven class.
Kabushehe said he is also a father and takes pride in his children’s education, even though one of them is already in secondary school while he is still completing primary level. He described Mathematics as his toughest subject but said he was more confident in others. He also encouraged other catechists who missed out on schooling to return and upgrade their education.
The headteacher of Kitaama Primary School, Nestooli Balisigala, described him as active and hardworking, noting that he also chaired the school management committee. The story is notable because it shows how adult learners in church roles are using the PLE pathway to re-enter formal education in Uganda.
