What the report says

Five-time Grammy winner Angélique Kidjo has become the first African musician to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, according to BBC Africa. The ceremony took place in Los Angeles on Tuesday and marked a milestone for the 66-year-old singer from Benin, whose career has helped bring African music to global audiences for more than four decades.

BBC Africa reported that Kidjo used the moment to reflect on the influence of African artists worldwide, saying the continent has given a great deal to music. She also described the honor as a symbol of her belief that people everywhere are connected as part of one human family.

The event was attended by family, friends and guests including actors Willem Dafoe and Djimon Hounsou, as well as Nigerian singer Adekunle Gold. Dafoe praised Kidjo’s energy and work ethic, while Harvey Mason Jr., head of the Recording Academy, said her music has bridged cultures and borders.

Kidjo’s recognition follows a long career that includes 18 albums, collaborations with artists such as Burna Boy, John Legend, Bono and Alicia Keys, and award wins including the 2023 Polar Music Prize. BBC Africa noted that she also works as a UNICEF and Oxfam goodwill ambassador and co-founded the Batonga Foundation, which supports vulnerable girls and women in Benin.
