Alupo, Ruto Witness Consecration of Rev Ekuru as Katakwa Diocese’s Fourth Bishop

Nile Post reported that Rt. Rev. Dr. Vitalis Job Ekuru was consecrated and enthroned as the fourth Anglican Bishop of Katakwa Diocese in Busia County, Kenya, during a ceremony on Sunday, July 26, 2026. The service was attended by Kenyan President William Ruto, Uganda’s Vice President Jessica Alupo, senior Anglican leaders and other dignitaries from Kenya and Uganda.

According to the report, the ceremony was led by the Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Kenya, Jackson Ole Sapit. Ekuru succeeds Bishop John Ekude, who retired after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 65. The Anglican rites included prayers, an examination of faith, the laying on of hands, anointing with oil and the presentation of episcopal symbols, including a Bible, ring and pastoral staff previously used by Ekude.

Nile Post said Archbishop Ole Sapit urged the new bishop to exercise servant leadership, protect church teaching, promote unity and care for the people under his charge. President Ruto congratulated Ekuru and affirmed cooperation between the Kenyan government and faith-based institutions. Alupo delivered a message from Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni to Ruto and commended faith-based organisations for their role in education, health, wealth creation and moral guidance.

The report described Ekuru as a priest, academic and administrator with more than two decades of experience. It said he has held roles including Chairman of the Diocesan House of Clergy, Archdeacon of Chamasiri Archdeaconry, adjunct lecturer at St. Paul’s University and lecturer at Carlile College’s Katakwa Satellite Campus. His installation marks a leadership transition for the ACK diocese serving communities in Busia County.
