Al-Shabab kills five Kenyan security personnel in ambush

Al Jazeera reported that five Kenyan security personnel were killed on Tuesday in an al-Shabab ambush near the Somalia border in Mandera county, northeastern Kenya. Citing Kenyan police, the report said the patrol from the Special Operations Group, described as an elite counterterrorism police unit, was attacked near Wantey Dam, roughly 6km from Lafey police station. A separate vehicle sent as reinforcement was later hit by a roadside bomb and destroyed, but police said those inside were not injured.

The armed group claimed the attack through an affiliated media channel, according to Al Jazeera. The incident was described as one of the deadliest in a recent wave of violence in the same Mandera area. The report cited earlier incidents this month, including a July 13 Kenyan operation against a suspected camp near the border in which officials said 11 fighters were killed, and July 24 attacks on the villages of Fino and Arabia.

Al-Shabab, which is linked to al-Qaeda, has fought Somalia’s central government for nearly two decades and still controls parts of south-central Somalia. Kenya has worked with Somali authorities against the group since sending troops into Somalia in 2011, after which al-Shabab has repeatedly staged cross-border attacks in Kenya and Ethiopia.

Al Jazeera also noted that the attack comes ahead of talks by leaders from countries contributing troops to the African Union mission in Somalia. The meeting follows a United States decision to end logistics support for the mission, raising concerns among analysts about the force’s future capacity to support Somalia’s campaign against al-Shabab.
