Airtel Uganda rallies Ugandans through its platforms to improve road safety

The Independent Uganda reported that Airtel Uganda has started a road safety awareness campaign in Kampala, using its telecom channels and senior leadership to reach subscribers and the wider public. The report, published July 31, 2026, said the initiative is being rolled out on the company’s digital platforms at a time when Uganda has recently experienced several deadly road crashes that have affected families and communities.

According to the publisher, Airtel is sending safety messages by SMS and adding reminders to some end-of-call or transaction notifications. The company says this approach places road safety prompts within routine customer interactions on its network. Airtel Uganda’s Executive Committee members are also appearing in videos aimed at different road users, including motorists, passengers, cyclists, boda boda riders and pedestrians.

Airtel Uganda CEO and Managing Director Soumendra Sahu said, in comments reported by The Independent, that everyday decisions on the road can help protect lives. The campaign urges drivers to keep within speed limits, avoid phone use while driving, not drive after drinking alcohol, wear seat belts, and check that vehicles are fit for travel. It also asks motorcyclists and passengers to use helmets, while pedestrians are encouraged to stay alert and cross at designated points where possible.

The company framed the effort as part of its broader use of connectivity and technology for community benefit.
