Afrigo Fans Sing Along to Classics at Masaka Tribute to Moses Matovu

What the report says
Afrigo Band returned to Masaka for a tribute performance that marked its first show there since the death of founder Moses Matovu, according to Nile Post. The concert took place on Saturday night at Garden Courts Hotel and drew a large crowd from Masaka City and nearby areas, with fans gathering to celebrate Matovu’s influence on the group and on Ugandan music more broadly.
The report says Matovu co-founded Afrigo in 1975 and helped shape its long-running sound as lead vocalist, saxophonist, manager and band leader until his death on September 24, 2026. His son, Ibra Matovu, led the band in Masaka for the first time, while singer Eddy Yawe also performed as part of the evening’s tribute. The set mixed well-known Afrigo classics with songs from Yawe and other older favourites, and the audience reportedly responded enthusiastically throughout the night.
Nile Post describes the event as both a concert and a memorial-style celebration of a musician whose work helped define several generations. Afrigo’s blend of rumba, jazz and African rhythms, often sung in Luganda, has long made it one of Uganda’s most recognisable groups. The occasion also highlighted the role of live music and sponsorship in sustaining major entertainment events, with Johnnie Walker named as the main sponsor.
