NUP Launches Tree-Planting Campaign, Targets 10 Million Trees Nationwide

What the report says
National Unity Platform supporters in Masaka City have started a tree-planting campaign that they say will run every month as part of a broader effort to encourage environmental conservation and protect natural resources. The initiative, reported by Nile Post, is being organized under a nationwide target of planting 10 million trees and was launched at Mayor’s Gardens in Katwe, where local party leaders and supporters took part in the first exercise.
The campaign in Masaka is being led by party mobiliser Habib Buwembo. Organisers said the monthly activity, which they have referred to as Bobi Wine Solidarity Day, is intended both to support environmental protection and to show appreciation for NUP president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu. They also linked the effort to concerns about heavy dependence on firewood and charcoal, saying the drive should highlight the need for more sustainable energy options.
Masaka City Mayor Florence Namayanja urged residents to protect trees already planted and to avoid activities that damage the environment. She also warned livestock owners against allowing animals to destroy public trees. Nyendo-Mukungwe Division Mayor Ronald Kasekende said more than 2,000 trees had already been planted in the division.
According to the report, local MPs also used the event to raise broader concerns about forest loss and environmental damage, calling for stronger protection of natural resources. The campaign is meant to mobilise communities across Masaka and beyond to participate in monthly planting efforts and support wider conservation goals.
