African quartet secure Women's World Cup places

Algeria, Morocco, Cameroon and Malawi have secured places at the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil after advancing to the semi-finals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, according to BBC Sport Football. The continental tournament is doubling as Africa’s qualification route for the expanded 32-team finals, with semi-finalists guaranteed World Cup spots.

Algeria reached the last four and booked a first ever Women’s World Cup berth by coming from behind to beat 10-player Ivory Coast 2-1. Morocco, who qualified for the tournament for the second time after reaching the last 16 in 2023, defeated South Africa 2-1. Cameroon advanced with a 1-0 win over Nigeria, helped by a long-range free-kick from 19-year-old Myriam Nyadjou. Malawi produced the day’s biggest surprise, overturning Ghana to win 2-1 and take the fourth African place.

The Wafcon semi-finals are scheduled for Wednesday, with Morocco set to meet Cameroon and Algeria to play Malawi. BBC Sport also noted that the four quarter-final losers — Ghana, Ivory Coast, Nigeria and South Africa — still have a route to the World Cup through intercontinental play-offs later in the year.

The 2027 Women’s World Cup will run in Brazil from 24 June to 25 July. At the time of the report, 18 of the 32 qualified teams had been confirmed across Africa, Asia, Europe, Oceania and South America.
