Africa: Sahel Security Crisis Demands Action Beyond Assurances of Solidarity

AllAfrica, carrying an Institute for Security Studies analysis by Fahiraman Rodrigue Koné dated 30 July 2026, reports that armed groups in the Central Sahel are using more coordinated tactics that could strain regional security cooperation. The analysis focuses on Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, the three members of the Alliance of Sahel States, and argues that West African governments and partners need to move beyond statements of support toward practical collaboration.

According to ISS, al-Qaeda-linked Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin and the separatist Azawad Liberation Front mounted coordinated attacks across Mali on 25 April, described as the most ambitious armed-group operation there since the country’s security crisis began in 2012. ISS says the assault led to the death of Defence Minister Sadio Camara and the seizure of Kidal and Tessalit. A similar offensive on 4 July targeted six locations; Malian forces and their Russian partner, Africa Corps, later retook Anéfis after several days of fighting.

The analysis says the FLA-JNIM cooperation suggests a more structured operational relationship, combining local networks in the north with asymmetric warfare capabilities in other regions. It also points to recent attacks or attempted attacks in Burkina Faso and Niger, including strikes aimed at strategic infrastructure, as signs of a broader shift involving multi-front operations, drones and attacks on leaders and trade routes.

ISS argues that the threat is increasingly regional, citing risks to coastal states such as Benin and Togo and disruptions to corridors leading to Bamako. It says renewed military coordination, intelligence sharing and African Union-backed dialogue could help revive regional mechanisms such as the Nouakchott Process and reduce the risk of a wider West African security crisis.
