Africa: NACC Welcomes AGOA Extension to 2028, Calls for Swift Action By Nigeria, Africa

The Nigerian-American Chamber of Commerce (NACC) has welcomed the extension of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) through December 31, 2028, following the signing of the Continuing Appropriations and Extensions Act, 2027, by U.S. President Donald Trump. In the report carried by Vanguard and distributed by AllAfrica, the chamber said the move preserves duty-free access to the U.S. market for Nigeria and 31 other sub-Saharan African countries, giving exporters and investors more certainty.

NACC said the extension is a chance for Nigeria to strengthen non-oil exports and broaden its industrial base. The chamber urged government, businesses and state authorities to act quickly to reduce bottlenecks that affect exporters, including port delays, standards compliance and logistics problems. It also encouraged Nigeria to deepen trade engagement with Washington on trade-related concerns and to work more closely with the African Union and the African Continental Free Trade Area to support Africa’s position on AGOA’s future.

The chamber specifically pointed to agricultural products, textiles, processed foods and manufactured goods as areas where Nigeria could build greater competitiveness. It also highlighted the potential for joint ventures, technology transfer and wider U.S.-Nigeria commercial ties. NACC said the remaining period should be used to prepare for a sustainable successor framework beyond AGOA and to create more jobs, industrial growth and foreign exchange earnings.
