Africa: Cotton to Cloth - The Story Africa Has Always Needed to Tell

AllAfrica reported on 23 July 2026 that it is launching “Cotton to Cloth,” a sustained editorial and information programme focused on Africa’s cotton value chain and the continent’s efforts to move from exporting raw fibre to producing higher-value textiles and garments. The publisher says the initiative begins in June 2026 and runs through December, with a dedicated hub across its platforms.

According to AllAfrica, Africa produces more than half of the world’s finest long-staple cotton but receives less than 3% of the value ultimately attached to that cotton after processing and manufacturing. The article frames the gap not only as an industrial and trade challenge, but also as a problem of global perception, arguing that the way Africa is covered affects investment decisions. It cites an annual cost of up to $4.2 billion from negative media stereotypes increasing African sovereign borrowing costs.

The programme is expected to include long-form journalism, policy analysis, investor-focused data, a monthly deal tracker, sector briefs, documentary work, podcasts, visual storytelling, interviews and commissioned commentary. AllAfrica also plans a youth and diaspora storytelling contest, a virtual roundtable, an exhibition at its Media Leaders Summit and participation in African institutional forums. The publisher says all material will be free and available in English and French.

AllAfrica positions the project as an effort to use its existing distribution network — including a large article archive, more than 140 media partners and institutional channels such as Bloomberg, Factiva, Reuters-linked services, Moody’s Analytics/NewsEdge and LexisNexis — to reach investors, policymakers and readers who influence perceptions of African economic risk.
