Africa: Cotton to Cloth - The Story Africa Has Always Needed to Tell

AllAfrica reported on 23 July 2026 that it is launching “Cotton to Cloth,” a multilingual editorial and data initiative focused on Africa’s role in the global cotton value chain and the continent’s limited share of the final value of cotton-based products. The publisher says Africa produces more than half of the world’s high-quality long-staple cotton but receives under 3% of the eventual value once the fibre is processed and sold as finished goods.

According to AllAfrica, the programme is intended to address what it frames as a perception and information gap affecting investment in African manufacturing. The article links global narratives about Africa to financing costs, citing an annual figure of up to $4.2 billion in higher sovereign borrowing costs attributed to negative media stereotypes. AllAfrica says its distribution network, archive and media partnerships give it a channel to reach policymakers, investors and financial-information platforms.

The initiative is scheduled to run from June through December 2026 and will include a dedicated hub across AllAfrica platforms. Planned content includes long-form journalism, policy analysis, interviews, documentary features, podcasts, data visualisations, an annual investment landscape publication, monthly deal tracking and sector intelligence briefs. AllAfrica says the material will be published in English and French and distributed freely.

The project’s broader significance lies in its focus on value addition: cotton grown in parts of Africa, particularly West Africa, often leaves the continent as raw fibre and returns as higher-priced textiles or clothing. The programme aims to spotlight processing, industrial policy, financing and the people and firms involved in efforts to move from raw cotton exports toward textile and garment production.
