SFGATE reported that San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan sustained significant but non-life-threatening injuries in a Bay Area car crash earlier this month, limiting his role as the team opens training camp. The crash occurred July 14 in Palo Alto near the Stanford Shopping Center, according to reporting cited from the San Francisco Chronicle.

According to SFGATE, multiple reports said Shanahan suffered a broken nose, broken hand, multiple broken ribs, a serious concussion and more than 40 stitches after his vehicle collided with an SUV. ESPN reporters Adam Schefter and Nick Wagoner reported that the other driver was not injured and that drugs and alcohol were not believed to be factors.

General manager John Lynch addressed the situation at the 49ers’ training camp opening press conference Saturday, confirming Shanahan had a concussion and fractures involving his ribs and nose. Lynch said the organization expects Shanahan to be ready for the Sept. 10 Week 1 game against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia, but noted he will remain in concussion protocol until medical staff clears him for full coaching duties.

The 49ers also issued a statement saying Shanahan will take part in team activities on a limited basis while recovering. With the first training camp practice scheduled for Sunday, assistant head coach and offensive line coach Chris Foerster and the team’s coordinators are expected to take on some of Shanahan’s responsibilities. The development matters because Shanahan’s availability affects the team’s preparation at the start of the 2026 season.
