What the report says

Manchester United have turned an uneven start to the Women’s Super League season into a strong run ahead of Sunday’s derby with Manchester City, according to BBC Sport Football. After failing to win any of their first three league matches, Eva Olid’s side have since put together six straight victories in all competitions and have climbed to fifth in the table, though they remain eight points behind unbeaten City.

BBC Sport says the biggest changes have come through a return to some of United’s previous strengths. Olid initially asked the team to play a more possession-based, attacking and higher-risk style, but results suggested the squad was still adjusting. After early losses to London City Lionesses and Chelsea, she encouraged players to reconnect with the defensive structure and habits that had previously served them well, while gradually adding elements of her preferred approach. The 1-1 draw with Arsenal is described as the point where that adjustment began to take hold.

The report also highlights off-pitch changes. Olid described a “transitional period” in which honest talks, a stronger understanding between coach and players, and the international break helped reset the group. She has also settled her coaching staff, with Jose Herrera and Gavin Beith joining the set-up. The improved spell has helped individuals, including Ella Toone and Maya le Tissier, while giving United momentum heading into a match that could further test their progress.
