49ers' Kyle Shanahan in car crash, suffers non-life-threatening injuries - USA Today

USA Today reported that San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is recovering from injuries sustained in a recent car crash and will have a reduced role as the team begins training camp. The 49ers said Shanahan’s injuries were not life-threatening and that he would take part in team activities on a limited basis while he recovers.

According to USA Today, Palo Alto police said dispatchers received a report of a two-vehicle crash at Alma Street and Hamilton Avenue near Stanford University on July 14 at 6:13 p.m. Police and fire crews responded. Lt. Nicolas Martinez told USA Today Sports that two drivers were involved, one person was taken to a local hospital, impairment was not suspected, both drivers cooperated, and no citation was issued.

49ers president of football operations and general manager John Lynch said on July 25 that Shanahan had “bumps and bruises” and a concussion, with doctors guiding the pace of his return. During Shanahan’s limited participation, assistant head coach Chris Foerster is expected to assume a larger role, working with coordinators Klay Kubiak, Raheem Morris and Brant Boyer as camp opens.

The timing matters for San Francisco because the first training camp practice was set for July 26, ahead of the 2026 season opener against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia, on Sept. 10. Shanahan, 46, is entering his 10th season with the 49ers. USA Today noted that he has led the team to two Super Bowl appearances, both losses to Kansas City.
