What the report says

The San Francisco Standard reported that 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan briefly appeared at the team’s first training camp practice in Santa Clara on Sunday, July 26, while recovering from injuries sustained in a car crash earlier in the month. The report said Shanahan, who is dealing with a concussion and multiple fractures, watched from near general manager John Lynch before heading back inside. San Francisco hopes he can ease back into his responsibilities over the next month before the Sept. 11 opener against the Los Angeles Rams.

On the field, quarterback Brock Purdy and new receiver Mike Evans produced an early highlight when Purdy hit Evans on a deep throw down the left sideline after Evans separated from cornerback Deommodore Lenoir. The defense answered later, with safety Malik Mustapha breaking up another deep attempt intended for Ricky Pearsall. With Shanahan limited, offensive assistant Klay Kubiak called plays, according to the report.

The Standard also highlighted encouraging signs from several veteran leaders. Nick Bosa, returning from an ACL tear suffered in Week 3 last season, did not fully practice but worked out in uniform and drew praise from left tackle Trent Williams. Fred Warner, also coming off a season-ending injury, participated fully, while Christian McCaffrey was active in the offense. Tight end George Kittle began camp on the physically unable to perform list as he continues recovering from an Achilles injury.

The developments matter because San Francisco is trying to rebuild health and rhythm after a season in which injuries and a weak pass rush were major issues. Rookie receiver De’Zhaun Stribling, the team’s top 2026 draft pick, also made two notable catches.
