NBCSports.com reported that San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch appeared without head coach Kyle Shanahan at the team’s opening news conference Saturday after Shanahan was injured in a July 14 car crash near his California home.

According to the report, the 49ers said Shanahan sustained multiple injuries in the collision, including a concussion, broken nose, three broken ribs, a broken hand and facial cuts that required 40 stitches. Lynch said Shanahan was recovering but still dealing with concussion-related effects. He also said the other driver appeared to be doing well, while noting that information was second-hand.

Lynch said the team does not have a formal concussion protocol for staff members, but Shanahan will effectively follow the player process under the supervision of team doctors, including Dr. Anthony “Nino” Saglimbeni. Shanahan has visited the 49ers’ facility since the crash and may have a limited presence early in training camp, including possibly attending some practices. Offensive line coach and assistant head coach Chris Foerster is handling head-coaching duties during Shanahan’s recovery.
