What the report says

Yahoo Sports reported that Jackson Koivun earned his first PGA Tour victory Sunday at the 3M Open, winning at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, Minnesota, only 24 days after turning professional. The 21-year-old former Auburn golfer closed with a 5-under 66 to finish at 25-under for the tournament, three shots clear of the field.

The win came after Koivun began the final round with a three-stroke advantage, built largely on a Saturday 10-under 61. According to Yahoo, his back-nine 28 in the third round set a tournament record and moved him to 20-under entering Sunday. Scottie Scheffler, the world’s top-ranked golfer, applied pressure with an 8-under final round and was two shots behind in the clubhouse, but Koivun completed a bogey-free closing round to secure the title.

Koivun’s victory was worth $1.584 million from an $8.8 million purse, pushing his early professional earnings past $1 million, Yahoo reported. Scheffler received $959,200 for second place. Hideki Matsuyama, Brian Harman, Chandler Phillips and Denny McCarthy tied for third, each earning $429,550.

The result adds to a rapid rise for Koivun, who won two national titles at Auburn and collected the major collegiate awards in his final amateur season, according to the report. After turning pro following the U.S. Open, he tied for 23rd at Shinnecock Hills and then tied for 10th at the ISCO Championship before breaking through at the 3M Open.
