Thousands of people gathered at Bumutoto Cultural Grounds in Mbale City for the launch of the 2026 Imbalu season, the Bagisu community’s long-standing initiation rite. According to Nile Post, the event drew attendees from Uganda and Kenya and featured traditional performances, speeches by cultural and political leaders, and the start of this year’s circumcision ceremonies.

The launch also exposed tension between customary practice and formal state protocol. As officials prepared to deliver government messages, a procession of circumcision candidates entered the arena for the ritual schedule, interrupting the programme and preventing the planned address from going ahead. Cultural leaders said the overlap happened because the traditional timetable could not be paused, while some participants blamed delayed official proceedings.

The ceremony was attended by senior Ugandan and Kenyan representatives, including Parliament Speaker Jacob Oboth-Oboth and Kenya’s High Commissioner to Uganda, Ababu Namwamba, underscoring cross-border links among Bamasaba communities around Mount Elgon. Five boys were circumcised during the launch, marking the formal start of months of initiation activity across Bugisu.

The event also highlighted calls to improve and preserve Bumutoto Cultural Grounds as a heritage and tourism site. More broadly, the launch matters because Imbalu remains a defining cultural milestone for the Bagisu and a source of regional identity, tourism interest and community connection.
