17-Year-Old Student Dies After Mityana-Mubende Road Crash

What the report says
A 17-year-old student has died after a road crash on the old Mityana-Mubende Road in central Uganda, according to Nile Post. Jamada Mugerwa, a student at Naama Secondary School and a resident of Katakala Cell in Mityana Municipality, died a day after the collision at Wabiruku Swamp. Police said the crash happened on Wednesday evening when Mugerwa was riding a motorcycle home from school and collided head-on with an oncoming Isuzu Elf. A fellow student riding with him was also injured.
Wamala Region police spokesperson SSP Lameck Kigozi said the motorcycle, a red Bajaj Boxer, and the blue Isuzu Elf were traveling in opposite directions near a bend when the impact occurred. Preliminary findings cited by police suggest the Isuzu Elf may have had defective headlights, which could have reduced visibility. The driver of the Isuzu Elf reportedly fled the scene after the collision and has not yet been found.
Police said traffic officers documented the scene, prepared a sketch plan and towed both vehicles for further inspection as investigations continue. Mugerwa and the other injured student were taken to Mityana General Hospital, where Mugerwa later died. The case has been changed from a serious crash to a fatal accident, and police have appealed for information that could help identify the driver.
The incident underscores ongoing concerns about road safety on Uganda’s highways, including visibility, vehicle condition and the response of drivers after crashes. Those broader concerns are general context; Nile Post’s report focused on the police investigation and the death of the teenager.
