Fox Business reported that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg used a Wall Street Journal opinion piece published Tuesday to argue that advanced artificial intelligence should be broadly available to individuals rather than concentrated in the hands of a small number of institutions. Zuckerberg pushed back on what he described as pessimistic warnings from some AI developers, saying he does not accept the idea that the safest future depends on tightly centralized control of powerful AI systems.

According to the report, Zuckerberg wrote that “superintelligence” beyond human capabilities could arrive within the next few years and could help people create, discover and grow the economy. He framed the issue as one of individual empowerment, comparing AI with earlier transformative technologies that initially raised fears but ultimately expanded prosperity and opportunity. He cited areas such as flight, electricity and personal computing as examples of major advances shaped in part by people outside established institutions.

Zuckerberg acknowledged a tension between AI used mainly for automation and AI used as a tool to extend people’s abilities. Fox Business reported that he warned an automation-heavy path could harm jobs and the broader economy, but predicted that widely distributed superintelligence would instead support more employment and make it easier to start companies without large amounts of upfront capital.

The comments matter because Meta is one of the major companies competing to build and deploy advanced AI systems, while governments, companies and researchers continue to debate safety, regulation, open models and economic disruption. Zuckerberg said Meta’s approach is guided by individual empowerment, invention and a balance of power, and expressed optimism that those values could produce a positive outcome.
