Zimbabwe: Zimbabwean Designers Stitch Heritage, Identity and Enterprise into Global Fashion

What the report says
AllAfrica, publishing a Bird Story Agency report dated 27 July 2026, says two Zimbabwean designers are preparing to present work at Africa Fashion Week London on 22-23 August 2026. The designers are Chido Kaseke, founder of PatCh Maokoe Zimbabwe, and Ropafadzo Kuki Mapira, founder and director of SOLEIL. Their collections are described as using fashion to express Zimbabwean heritage, identity, craft and contemporary design.
The report says their participation is being supported through Creative DNA Zimbabwe, a pan-African fashion accelerator backed by the British Council and the Swiss Embassy in Zimbabwe and delivered locally by Haus of Stone Showroom. Danayi Chapfika-Madondo, the founder and creative director of Haus of Stone Showroom, is leading the designers under the programme. According to the article, Creative DNA has supported more than 50 Zimbabwean fashion creatives through mentorship, business development and seed funding since expanding into Zimbabwe.
The London event is framed not only as a runway opportunity but also as a route to buyers, retail exposure, networks and possible export growth. Farai Ncube Tarwireyi, the British Council’s regional arts director for Sub-Saharan Africa, is cited as saying access to markets and industry connections remains a major challenge for African designers, even when talent is present.
The report also highlights the wider economic ecosystem around fashion, including artisans, textile producers, photographers, stylists, marketers and retailers. PatCh Maokoe Zimbabwe’s handbag production is linked to women artisans trained through local mentorship, while SOLEIL is presented as part of a younger contemporary design wave. The story matters because it places Zimbabwean fashion within a broader effort to build creative industries, create income opportunities and reshape international perceptions of the country through design.
