What the report says

Zimbabwe police have arrested James Masunda, one of two convicts who escaped from Mutimurefu Prison in Masvingo on August 8, according to New Zimbabwe via AllAfrica. The Zimbabwe Republic Police said Masunda, 34, was taken into custody on August 14 after a shoot-out at Matsa Village in Renco, Masvingo. Authorities had previously described the escapees as dangerous and had appealed to the public for help locating them.

Police said their investigation suggests that after leaving prison, Masunda and his alleged accomplice, Tafadzwa Janyure Zimirenyika, 27, carried out a series of armed robberies while on the run. The reported motive was to obtain clothing, food and cash. Zimirenyika has not been found, and police said efforts to track him down are continuing.

The arrest is a significant development in the manhunt that followed the prison break and may reduce immediate public safety concerns in the area. The case also highlights the broader challenge facing Zimbabwean authorities when dangerous escapees remain at large. More generally, prison escapes that are followed by alleged violent crime often prompt heightened police warnings and community alerts, as happened here. The remaining suspect is still sought, and police have asked anyone with information to contact the nearest station.
