Zimbabwe: Govt Moves to Create National Database for Small Businesses

What the report says
Zimbabwe’s government is developing a national database for micro, small and medium enterprises, or MSMEs, in a move aimed at formalising the sector, improving access to state support and giving policymakers better data for planning. The report, carried by 263Chat and distributed by AllAfrica, says the project is being handled by the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Corporation (SMEDCO) and has reached the minimum viable product stage, with an online registration portal under development.
Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Minister Monica Mutsvangwa discussed the initiative at a stakeholders workshop in Harare. According to the article, she said reliable information is needed to understand where enterprises operate, what they need and how they can grow. She also said small businesses remain important to the economy, while many still face difficulties accessing finance, markets and business development services.
The proposed platform would create a central register, reduce duplicated records and improve coordination among institutions that serve small businesses. SMEDCO chief executive Obert Ngwenya said firms will be able to register online and receive official recognition, which could improve their standing with lenders, suppliers and customers. The corporation is also working on a business-to-business marketplace and discussing integration with agencies such as the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority and the Procurement Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe.
The article says the government wants the system to align with the Small and Medium Enterprises Act, protect business data and include rural enterprises, women-led firms, youth ventures and businesses run by persons with disabilities.
