‘You Leave Behind the Footprints of a King’ — Elly Karuhanga Mourns King Oyo

Veteran lawyer and business leader Elly Karuhanga has published a personal tribute to the late King of Tooro, Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, mourning a monarch he said he had watched grow from childhood into a prominent cultural figure. In the tribute, reported by Nile Post, Karuhanga said his grief was also tied to long-standing family friendships with the Tooro royal household, including the late King Oyo’s father, King Kaboyo, and other senior royals.

Karuhanga described Oyo as a child who inherited the throne in 1995 after his father’s death, and said the young king carried the weight of leadership from an early age. He credited Queen Mother Best Kemigisa with helping shape Oyo’s conduct and public image through values associated with Batooro tradition, such as dignity, courtesy and kindness. The tribute framed Oyo’s life as both a personal and public journey, from a boy-king to one of Uganda’s best-known cultural leaders.

Nile Post also reported that King Oyo died on August 27, 2026, at age 34, while receiving treatment in the United States after suffering from brain cancer. His death has prompted national mourning, with President Yoweri Museveni ordering an official state burial and flags flown at half-mast. The king’s remains are expected back in Uganda on September 4, with burial rites planned at the Karambi Royal Tombs in Fort Portal.
