Yemeni forces claim strategic district amid intensified Houthi clashes

Yemen’s internationally recognised government said its forces recaptured Hais district in Hodeidah province as fighting with Houthi rebels intensified across western Yemen, especially in Taiz and along the Red Sea coast. The district sits on a route connecting Hodeidah, Taiz and Ibb, making it strategically significant in the broader conflict, according to the report by Al Jazeera, which cited Yemen’s military and Anadolu.

The article said the renewed clashes involved air raids, ground offensives and drone strikes, with government officials claiming the capture of dozens of Houthi fighters in nearby al-Jarahi district and further attacks on rebel positions in Taiz and Lahj. Presidential Leadership Council chairman Rashad al-Alimi said the armed forces could restore full control of the country, while warning the Houthis of consequences and accusing Iran of backing the group.

The fighting has had a severe humanitarian impact. Al Jazeera reported, citing AFP and Yemen’s state news agency Saba’a, that more than 60 people were killed in Taiz on Saturday, including civilians, and that Houthi shelling on a road linking Taiz and Aden killed four civilians and wounded nine others. The UN humanitarian office said about 1,800 families were displaced in two days. The escalation matters because Taiz is a key frontline in Yemen’s long-running war and any push toward the Bab al-Mandeb strait could affect a major Red Sea shipping route.
