Yemen’s government says Houthi strikes hit residential areas in Marib

Yemen’s government says Houthi forces carried out a series of missile and drone attacks on the government-held city of Marib, with some of the strikes landing in residential areas. According to Al Jazeera’s report, Marib provincial officials said the group fired four ballistic missiles and four drones on Saturday, causing injuries and damaging homes, vehicles and other property. Officials later said a fifth missile injured one person, and a sixth was launched overnight toward the city.

The Ministry of Information condemned the attacks as an escalation that puts civilians, displaced families and crowded neighborhoods at risk. Marib is especially significant because it hosts Yemen’s largest population of internally displaced people, with more than two million people reportedly living there after fleeing the war elsewhere in the country. Al Jazeera said video it verified showed destruction after the strikes.

The reported attacks came amid broader fighting in Yemen, including clashes farther south in Taiz and continued exchanges between Houthi forces and the internationally recognized government. Al Jazeera also noted that the latest violence follows a sharp rise in hostilities since early August, when deadly Houthi strikes hit military targets in Marib and Hadramout. The renewed attacks add to concerns that the conflict could intensify again after several years of relative calm under the 2022 UN-brokered truce.
