What the report says

MLB Trade Rumors reported that the New York Yankees plan to activate left-hander Max Fried from the 15-day injured list for the second game of a Wednesday doubleheader against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Yankee Stadium. Fried is slated to start opposite Bubba Chandler, following an afternoon matchup expected to feature Mitch Keller against Gerrit Cole.

According to the report, Fried has been out for more than two months after being diagnosed in mid-May with a bone bruise in his throwing elbow. MLB Trade Rumors noted that tests showed no ligament damage, but the injury still required him to stop throwing before beginning a rehab assignment. He made one rehab appearance for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday, throwing three innings and 52 pitches.

The Yankees had initially indicated Fried would make another minor league start, but MLB Trade Rumors said the club changed course and will bring him back for what is expected to be a limited major league outing. The doubleheader context gives New York some flexibility because teams may carry an extra pitcher, and the Yankees have an off day Thursday, which could help cover bullpen usage.

Fried had a 3.21 ERA through his first 10 starts this season, averaging a little more than six innings per outing before the injury. His return adds a notable arm to a rotation that also includes Cole, Cam Schlittler, Ryan Weathers and Will Warren, while Carlos Rodón has been unavailable this month.
