Nintendo Everything reports that early players of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition have found a notable change to one of the original game’s most criticized systems: Field Skills. The updated version has begun becoming available in Australia and New Zealand ahead of its wider July 30 launch, allowing fans to identify adjustments that Nintendo had not previously highlighted.

In the original Nintendo Switch release, Field Skills often required players to pause exploration and rearrange equipped Blades so their party met specific checks tied to abilities such as elemental mastery, Lockpicking, Leaping or Focus. Nintendo Everything notes that this could become especially frustrating because only currently equipped Blades contributed, forcing players through menus and sometimes adding grind or backtracking to progression.

According to the report, the Switch 2 Edition now appears to count Field Skills across all Blades owned by the player, rather than only the limited set equipped to party members. That means players should no longer need to repeatedly swap Blades just to satisfy a navigation or interaction requirement. However, the article cautions that the exact calculation method is still unclear, including whether the game simply totals every relevant point or selects an optimal combination behind the scenes.

Nintendo Everything also reports a smaller quality-of-life change: built-in console gameplay recording, absent from the original Switch version, is now supported. The fix matters because Field Skills were a long-running complaint among Xenoblade Chronicles 2 players, and this update could make the role-playing game’s exploration flow more smoothly for returning players and newcomers on Nintendo Switch 2.
