Xbox Is Asking Customers to Volunteer to Test Ad-Supported Game Streaming - Variety

What the report says
Variety reports that Xbox has begun a limited, voluntary trial of ad-supported cloud gaming for members of Xbox Insiders, its fan feedback and testing program. The test, announced Thursday, is available to Xbox Insiders with an Xbox account and lets participants stream selected games they already own, such as “Forza Horizon 6” and “007 First Light,” as well as free-to-play titles including “Call of Duty: Warzone,” “Genshin Impact” and “War Thunder.”
Under the test, players watch a two-minute set of multiple ads before entering the cloud streaming queue. Variety says the ads will come from widely known brands and will vary by market. After the ad block, users receive a one-hour play session without mid-game advertising, though the session includes countdown notices. Players who want to continue after the hour can watch another ad block and resume.
The trial is notable because Xbox cloud gaming currently requires a Game Pass subscription, while this experiment allows Xbox Insiders without Game Pass to stream eligible owned games or free-to-play titles on devices such as handhelds, PCs and TVs through the Xbox app. Xbox said it has not confirmed whether the experiment will become a permanent ad-supported tier, but said it plans to use feedback from the test to refine the experience.
In an Xbox Wire post cited by Variety, the company framed the approach as a way to lower access costs while avoiding interruptions during gameplay. Xbox also said cloud streaming can help some Xbox One owners play newer Xbox Series X|S titles without immediately buying new hardware, particularly in markets where consoles are less accessible or less affordable.
