Xbox Console Sales Jumped 86 Percent In June Despite High Prices - Kotaku

Kotaku, citing Circana’s June U.S. video game market report and comments from Circana analyst Mat Piscatella, reported that Xbox console unit sales rose 86% from a year earlier despite higher average prices. The increase came after a weak comparison month in June 2025, when the Switch 2 launch dominated hardware spending, and ahead of another Xbox price increase expected in August. Xbox still placed third among consoles in both unit and dollar sales for June, while its average selling price was 13% higher than a year ago.

Overall U.S. hardware spending fell 62% year over year to $383 million, largely because June 2025 included the Switch 2’s record-setting launch period. Kotaku reported that Switch 2 remained the top-selling system by both units and dollars for June and for 2026 so far, while PlayStation ranked second despite a 19% spending decline. Piscatella characterized Switch 2 performance as holding up well, with its U.S. install base still ahead of the original Switch on a time-aligned basis.

On the software side, Circana said total video game content spending dropped 12% from last June, though year-to-date spending was flat. Subscriptions were the only content category to grow year over year. UFC 6 debuted as June’s best-selling game overall and on PlayStation, followed by Meccha Chameleon, which Circana estimated at about 4 million copies sold. Star Fox opened at No. 4 and led Nintendo platforms.

Kotaku reported that total U.S. video game spending reached $4.5 billion in June, down 21% year over year. For 2026 to date, spending was only 1% below the same point in 2025, suggesting the market remains broadly steady after last year’s hardware-driven spike.
