X relaunches a rebuilt Android app after year-long effort - TechCrunch

TechCrunch reported that X has released a rebuilt Android app worldwide after nearly a year of work aimed at improving a version of the service that had lagged behind its iOS app. The company said the refreshed app is available through the Google Play Store and was redesigned from the ground up, with claimed gains in loading, scrolling, notifications and overall reliability.

According to TechCrunch, X began signaling the Android overhaul last year, when head of product Nikita Bier said the company was assembling an Android-focused team. Bier described the release as one of X’s largest engineering efforts and said it was a full rewrite rather than a routine update. A post from X’s Grok account said the project used a Kotlin and Jetpack Compose stack, while also noting it had no visibility into internal contribution data.

The Android launch matters because Android is the leading smartphone platform in many international markets, and TechCrunch noted that past problems with the app had included failures to load posts from links. A stronger Android experience could help X retain or regain users while it continues adding products such as X Money and X Chat, which have also been spun out into standalone apps.

TechCrunch also reported that the rollout is not complete in every respect. Bier said the company still needs to improve performance on older Android devices and add Spaces support. Other features, including a new video editor, react-with-video, cashtags and custom timelines, are also planned for Android.
