Wrexham close in on Burnley defender Worrall

Wrexham are close to signing Burnley centre-back Joe Worrall before Tuesday’s 23:00 BST transfer deadline, according to BBC Sport Football. The 29-year-old is being targeted as Phil Parkinson looks to strengthen a defence that has not kept a clean sheet in four matches this season.

BBC Sport reports that Worrall has yet to make a league appearance for Burnley this campaign, having been an unused substitute in their first three Championship games. His only outing under new boss Nicky Hayen this term came in Burnley’s EFL Cup win over Notts County on 8 August. Wrexham lost 2-1 to Birmingham City on Friday, after which Parkinson said his team had conceded two of the softest goals of his time in charge.

Worrall began his career at Nottingham Forest, where he made 226 appearances and later helped the club win promotion to the Premier League via the Championship play-offs. He joined Burnley in 2024 and has made 27 appearances in all competitions for the Clarets. BBC Sport also notes that a move for Worrall could open the door for Conor Coady to leave Wrexham, while several other players may depart before the window closes. Wrexham return to Championship action at Millwall on Wednesday.
