BBC Sport reported that Spain’s World Cup final win over Argentina on Sunday drew a peak audience of 15.8 million across BBC One and BBC iPlayer. The match, decided by Ferran Torres’ extra-time goal, gave Spain its second World Cup title, according to the report published on 20 July 2026 by BBC Sport journalist Sam Drury.

The broadcaster said it had a 64% share of all television viewing during the final, with an average audience of 13.9 million. Digital use was also substantial: the final was streamed 11.1 million times via BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website and app, including 2.4 million UHD streams on iPlayer. BBC Sport’s live text coverage recorded more than 18.8 million views, 14.2 million of them from the UK.

The report also gave wider tournament figures for the BBC’s World Cup coverage. The third-place play-off between England and France peaked at 11.8 million on BBC One and iPlayer, while overall TV reach across the tournament was put at 42.8 million. BBC said World Cup matches were streamed 237 million times on its digital platforms, more than double the 2022 total, and that football content made up a third of all BBC iPlayer streaming during the competition.

BBC Sport added that its website and app had 57.2 million unique visitors during the tournament, with 1.7 billion content views. The BBC Football YouTube channel generated 100 million views, while social video content across platforms reached 2.55 billion views. The figures matter as they indicate how major live sports events continue to draw large broadcast audiences while also driving rapidly expanding digital and social consumption.
