What the report says

Liverpool academy director Alex Inglethorpe has outlined how the club’s youth system is being shaped to support the first team, in comments to BBC Sport at the AXA Training Centre in Kirkby. He described the academy’s long-term aim as producing players who can step up to senior football and, ideally, help Liverpool win trophies, with Trent Alexander-Arnold held up as a clear example of that pathway after progressing from the academy to major honours before moving to Real Madrid.

The BBC reported that Inglethorpe also discussed the working relationship with head coach Andoni Iraola, saying the first-team staff made an early effort to understand the academy. Several young players, including Rio Ngumoha, Trey Nyoni, Lewis Koumas and James McConnell, have been involved with the senior side this season. Inglethorpe said Liverpool are trying to manage a changing youth market, including contract rules at academy level and the growing competition for 16-year-old talent.

He also addressed the club’s approach to identity and recruitment, saying Liverpool values local players but does not require them to be from the city to fit the culture. He pointed to players such as Luca Eden, a 15-year-old midfielder who recently became Liverpool’s youngest Uefa Youth League player, as part of the next generation. More broadly, Inglethorpe said some youngsters will leave to build careers elsewhere, with Jarell Quansah and Trent Alexander-Arnold cited as examples of graduates whose development benefited from different routes.

The interview came as Liverpool prepare for a planned £20m academy redevelopment due by 2028, underlining the club’s continued commitment to producing first-team players.
