What the report says

Al Jazeera, citing The Associated Press, reported that a construction worker has died during renovation work at FC Barcelona’s Camp Nou stadium. The club said in a brief statement on Saturday that the worker had lost his life in a workplace accident the previous day and offered condolences to his relatives, friends and colleagues.

According to the report, Catalan police said the man was 54 and died after being struck on the head. Authorities did not provide further details to AP about how the accident happened. The incident occurred amid the ongoing redevelopment of the Barcelona venue, one of the most prominent stadium projects in European football.

Barcelona began a major modernization of Camp Nou in 2023. The team returned to the stadium in November with fan attendance restricted while construction continued, according to Al Jazeera’s account. The project is intended to expand the completed venue’s capacity to 105,000, which would keep it as Europe’s largest football stadium.

The death comes as Barcelona prepare for the new season after winning La Liga in each of the past two campaigns. Al Jazeera reported that the club are scheduled to open their league season away to Elche on August 23, with their first home match at the partly reopened Camp Nou set for August 27 against Athletic Bilbao.
