Woman killed in Times Square stabbing, suspect shot dead by police

A woman was killed and another person was injured after a stabbing in Times Square, New York City, late on Wednesday afternoon, according to BBC World News. Police said officers shot the suspect, who later died in hospital, after she allegedly attacked two people with knives near Seventh Avenue.

New York police said the assault appeared to be random and unprovoked. The first victim, a 68-year-old man, was stabbed near West 41st Street after the suspect reportedly pulled two knives from a bag. He survived and was taken to hospital in stable condition. Police said the second victim was stabbed farther north on Seventh Avenue and later died. The injured victim was also taken to hospital, where the person remains stable.

Officials said emergency calls came in around 16:24 local time, and officers spent several minutes trying to persuade the suspect to drop the weapons before firing when she moved toward them. The suspect was identified as 49-year-old Pamela Cisneros of Queens.

BBC World News reported that police said Cisneros had a documented mental health history with the NYPD, including prior incidents in 2018 and 2019. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani thanked officers for stopping what he called a potentially worse attack. The case has renewed attention on public safety in one of the city’s busiest tourist areas.
