What the report says

BBC World News reports that Bordeaux Mayor Thomas Cazenave is preparing for possible further evacuations as a major wildfire in France’s Gironde region has advanced to within about 15km (nine miles) of the south-western city. Cazenave said the city is getting ready to receive a large number of evacuees if authorities order more people to leave. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez described conditions facing firefighters in Gironde as unprecedented, saying the blaze appeared to have “a life of its own.”

The BBC said Jerome Steffe, mayor of nearby Cestas, described the situation in his town as catastrophic after 17,000 residents were evacuated overnight when the fire expanded two days earlier. According to Steffe, 42,000 hectares have burned in the region and 240 homes have been destroyed. He said crews had made only limited progress and remained worried about flying embers and changes in wind direction, while teams worked to create firebreaks.

The crisis is part of a wider European wildfire emergency during another severe heatwave. French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said France is experiencing an unprecedented fire season, with 116,085 hectares burned and 13,566 fire starts recorded since January. He said most fires are human-caused, often through carelessness, while some are suspected to have been deliberately set; 162 arrests have occurred since 6 July. President Emmanuel Macron is visiting affected areas in Gironde to support emergency responders.

The BBC also reports large fires in Spain, including west of Madrid, where more than 100,000 people have been evacuated and satellite imagery shows a rapidly expanding burn area. Broader context cited by the BBC notes that climate change is increasing heat extremes in Europe, raising wildfire risks.
