NBC News reported that Mia Bieniemy, wife of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, has been moved out of intensive care after being wounded in a weekend shooting at the couple’s home in Ashburn, Northern Virginia. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid gave the update Wednesday during training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri, saying she was improving and that Eric Bieniemy remained with her.

According to NBC News, authorities said the shooting happened Sunday during what the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office described as a domestic disturbance. The couple’s 27-year-old son, Elijah Zion Bieniemy, was arrested and booked on suspicion of malicious wounding, using a firearm in the commission of a felony and firing a gun inside a dwelling. Officials have not disclosed a possible motive.

NBC News cited a criminal complaint saying a .22-caliber Ruger was fired, injuring Mia Bieniemy’s left forearm and shoulder, with a projectile crossing her chest area. Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman previously told NBC News that Mia Bieniemy was able to call 911 herself. The report said Elijah Bieniemy was held at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center and has a next court date scheduled for Aug. 31; a public defender representative could not immediately be reached for comment.

The case has drawn attention because Eric Bieniemy holds one of the NFL’s most prominent assistant coaching roles, overseeing a Chiefs offense led by Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce. Reid said the team remains in contact with Bieniemy while his return timetable is unclear.
