What the report says

Wales have reached the final of the European play-offs for the 2027 Women’s World Cup after beating Albania, but BBC Sport reports that even a win over Norway may not guarantee direct qualification for Brazil. The first leg will be at Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday, 1 December, with the return match in Norway four days later. Rhian Wilkinson’s side are chasing a first Women’s World Cup berth and would count any victory over a highly ranked Norway team as a major achievement.

The qualification format is unusually complicated. Seven of the eight European play-off winners will qualify directly, while the lowest-ranked survivor from the qualifying group stage must go into inter-confederation play-offs next February. Wales’ route now depends in part on results elsewhere, especially Finland’s final against Italy. If Finland win, a Welsh victory over Norway would send Wales straight to the tournament; if Finland lose, Wales could still be forced into the extra play-off round.

BBC Sport says Norway go into the tie as favourites, ranked well above Wales and fresh from an aggregate win over Romania. Norway have never missed a Women’s World Cup and won the title in 1995, while Wales have not previously qualified for the competition. The matchup also carries added interest because Gemma Grainger, Wales’ former head coach, now leads Norway. Wales captain Angharad James said the squad expects a competitive two-legged contest and believes they can cause an upset.
