Why Israel’s latest assault on Hebron is so significant for the West Bank

What the report says
Israeli forces have carried out days of raids, closures and forced displacement in Hebron, an occupied West Bank city whose Palestinian population is central to the territory’s economy and daily life. According to Al Jazeera, the operation followed a Friday shooting attack near a military checkpoint that killed two Israeli soldiers and two Palestinian suspects. Since then, Israeli authorities have locked down the city, detained at least 47 Palestinians and forced roughly 2,500 people from their homes, while some Palestinian houses were turned into military posts and barracks.
The report says the displacement has been concentrated in the Ein Deir Bahha area, where dozens of families fled at night and nearly 500 Palestinian families have been uprooted across a 350-dunam zone. Local officials and rights researchers described the measures as collective punishment and warned that the scale of demolition and expulsions could deepen an already severe crisis in the West Bank. As background, Hebron has long been divided under the 1997 Hebron Protocol into Palestinian and Israeli-controlled sectors, with the more restricted H2 area under tight military control.
Al Jazeera also highlighted Hebron’s economic significance: it accounts for a large share of Palestinian industrial output and exports, and it contains a high concentration of checkpoints and movement barriers. Restrictions there can disrupt supply chains, raise costs and force businesses to cut production. The article links the current operation to broader efforts to expand settler control in the city’s Old City and near the Ibrahimi Mosque, underscoring why developments in Hebron are seen as significant far beyond the city itself.
